Elemental Peace
42"H x 20"W x 12"D This collaboration responded to a long piece of wood cut in half. LB-1602-A
13"H x 4"D This piece started with a large test tube - which suggested it should house a specimen for display. Kristin Shiga made the specimen "LB-1602-A", cast from a real orchid by Lisa Geertsen. Jason fashioned the wood top and coordinated the collab. A funny conversation with Frans Lotz and Kristin led to the idea to display the specimen in an unstable base made from something heavy and crude. Frans devised a way to ensure the base would wobble but not fall over (it is weighted with sand from the sandblast cabinet). Kristin had the idea to suspend the specimen such that it would swing and react to the movement of the base. The intent is to make the viewer a little nervous until they realize it won't fall over. Materials include: steel, blasting sand, wood, milk paint, pigments, silver, 22 K gold and zirconia.

The Walrus Wilderness
21" W x 15"H X 4" D Holly is an invasive tree in the Pacific Northwest. Its berries are spread by birds throughout the forest where it can grow in full shade, often at the base of an allopathic tree. Removing the holly tree - as we did for this piece - and using it as a substitute for ivory felt like a poetic use of materials. Angelita's forest scenes echoed the object's origins and imbued the sculpture with a story of its place and time. Made by Kevin Shulka and Angelita Surmon with holly, acrylic and steel.

Whiria te Muka Tangata - Weaving People Together
10" H x 6" W x 1" D Made from harakeke (NZ flax) paper, raurekau (NZ native) dye, harakeke seed pod dye, Camp Colton foraged ash and earth pigment, cotton/abaca paper, muka (strong fine fiber extracted from harakeke). The primary artist, Jo Tito, has always loved books, so when she found out that Julie Johnson and John Wirth would be doing book binding at Frogwood, she thought she hit the jackpot as she had always wanted to make books with the harakeke paper she makes. Made with the guidance of Julie and John with inner cotton/abaca pages made by Julie, it also holds a journey of learning process and meaningful conversations. At the center are two spirals, one seen and one unseen, hidden in the spine. These two koru (spirals) reflect te kore - a space of nothingness where all potential lives.
