Dwelling Above
10"x6"x10". Artists: Jerri Bartholomew, Susan Schimelfining, Julie Johnson, Harete Tito. Kiln cast glass, found steel, dogbane and Acacia gum. The glass house is part of a series started during Covid, wildfires and Black Lives Matter; a cozy dwelling above the chaos. It being held up like a tree house gave rise to it needing a ladder for access - one that seemed to be built by the person who lives there. The ladder was created by Susan with help from Julie (who instructed Susan on how to make dogbane cordage) and Harete (who provided the Acacia gum to stiffen the ladder rungs). Susan was delighted to include the bark in her first dogbane cordage!

Rock Bot (short for Rock Bottom)
11"x6.5"x4.5". Artists: Jason Greene, Winona Hwang, Lisa Klakulak and Zachary Pearson. Materials: found river rock, found cedar sticks, felt, brass, glass. Narrative by Jason: "I was sitting down at the creek when this rock starting looking at me. Ddin't think much of it until I turned my back on it. When I turned back around I swear it had moved a few feet. After some close observation I now believe there are many of these little creatures living in the creeks. I was able to coax this little fella away from the water by feeding him a steady supply of stone flies."

Orchestrated Consonance
21"x6"x6". Artists: Kellen Bateham, Clair Guy, Rose Covert. The woven piece was made by Rose using willow bark, cedar bark and walnut bark; the pure iron and mild steel base was made by Kellen Bateham and Clair Guy. This piece is about balance and the interplay between very different natural elements. There is an aspect of free form gestures in the forms: hard and soft, movement and stillness. This piece is in conversation between harmonius parts.

Indigo Beginnings
10.5"x4"x5". Artists: Alex Gupton, Leondra Brackett, Tai Lake, Ajit Aserappa, April Ottey, Adare, Peter Underwood. Materials: rosewood, maple, cast silver indigo pod, paint, and ink. This lonely box wax left with a broken top from a prvious Frogwood. Tai and Ajit assumed correctly that someone would salvage it at the next collab. Alex and Peter repaired the front enough to paint, which Leondra did to perfection. April's beautiful cast silver indigo pod provided the new focal point. Alex inked the front and coordinated the project.

Train of Thought
1 foot x 5 feet. Artists: Peter Underwood and Alexis Hope; Mike Free, Lisa Klakulak, Julie Johnson, Ron Gerton, Zachary Pearson, Kristin Lake, Sally Ault and Michael Hosaluk. Materials: Espresso maker, drill, egg-beater, roller skates, birdcage, felted steam cloud, chess pieces, horn brass, children's math tiles, flashlight and a dead (as found!) hummingbird resting in a nest of lichens and other fibers.
Train of Thought was created by two junk-loving, antique-collecting artists of different generations who live in Seattle, WA (Alexis) and South Kona, HI (Peter). The duo embraced an improvisational style as they worked, moving quickly, not afraid to make mistakes and with a shared belief that every object can be rewritten to create something that never existed before. The combination of swift construction techniques, spending time on whimsical details that make people smile - and contributions from many talented artists who walked by the work bench - all brought this unique piece to life. The artists set off on a wild path, never gave up, and didn't stop until they believed in it.

The Silkworm - two books
4"x4" each. Artists: Leslie Crist, John Wirth, Julie Johnson, Alex Gupton, Jerri Bartholomew, Ben Smith, Ajit Aserappa. Materials: glass, enamel paint, reeled and plied antique silk, double-couched handmade flax paper with hand-dyed silk centers, waxed linen thread, and nickel chromium wire. This book started with a simple question, " Is it possible to make a book with glass covers? Julie's offer of to make flax paper with Leslie's hand-dyed silk came at the same time that John pressed for content - not just blank pages. Leslie's experiences with silk led her to Rumi's poem and her sketches on glass. Many artists helped repurpose a cordless drill for use as a "spinning wheel" to create the 8-ply silk thread spine. Alex Gupton calligraphied the beautiful poem on the handmade flax paper pages.

Renewal
16"x20". Artists: Kellen Bateham, Clair Guy, Peter Reich, Danielle Barbour, and Greg Wilbur. Narrative by Greg: "At the 2023 Frogwood, Danielle presented the 'puffs' - a new form for me. What and how?? Turned wood with a special joyous flare at the end. I had been working magnets into my work and envisioned them being used in a similar manner: Plucked and Positioned. The year's collab we lucked out getting Peter Reich. He, Kellen and Clair forged this amazing tree. Wood/Iron/Magnets = Really, really great!" Danielle's wood flower puffs are interactive - they attach with magnets onto the gorgeous, flowing tree.

4”x2”x2”. Artist: Kristin Mitsu Shiga. Materials: hammered and hand-colored copper. There’s only one reason that I found artist collaborations - Greg Wilbur. While I have never formally studied with him, Greg has been a mentor and inspiration throughout my career. These organic hammered copper forms flowed from my hammer in a language I learned by mere proxiity to the rhythm of his making. It symbolizes the sprouting and flowering and fruiting of all the many seeds he has scattered in his lifetime. We are all so grateful for the collab ohana he has forged into being.

Materials: wooden HVAC floor register, steel base, and every other material available at the collab. This piece provides a window into the creative minds of a few artists. Artists: Alex Gupton, Tami Dean, Mike Free, Kristin Lake, Marjin Wall, Jerri Bartholomew, Susan Schimelfining, Rose Covert, Angelita Surmon, Deb Curtis, Adare, Melissa Engler, Lisa Geertsen, Judy Zugish, Danielle Barbour and Graeme Priddle. Materials: wooden HVAC floor register, steel base, and every other material available at the collab. This piece provides a window into the creative minds of a few artists. When asked to fill each tiny space with no constraints or barriers, the artists were free to play and let their minds wander. As always, the results are varied, chaotic and random. But as with various personalities and talents, the results are eclectic, fun and strangely cohesive!

Bark and Beach Whispers
24"x5". Artists: Judy Zugish, Tom Willing, Melissa Engler, Graeme Priddle and Kevin Shluka. Materials: Mature bark of Metasqequoia (harvested and saved for 20 years), found driftwood stick (from a childhood beach), and copper. A Sunday walk on a driftwood beach. Sea salt shores. Waves lullaby, quiet the mind. Small whispers. I hear chatter from the sticks scattered amonst the logs. Sea birds call and swoop the sky. I heard the sticks, washed clean from the sea, talking amongst themselves. Tall tales. Shaggy bark. Let me tell you: "When I was just a boy this tree and me we grew together. Those were good times."
